Guide to Homeopathy

Homeopathy was developed in the nineteenth century by a German doctor named Samuel Hahnemann. At this time modern pharmaceutical drugs were not available, and yet doctors were often able to achieve remarkable cures with natural substances. This was despite not knowing how or why many of them worked, and often prescribing them in toxic doses which would harm as often as they healed. Frustrated with the inconsistent results and dangerous side effects associated with conventional medicine at that time, Dr. Hahnemann sought for a way to use these powerful natural medicines more safely and reliably. He developed the system of homeopathy to refine and eventually replace the haphazard approach to prescribing so common among his medical colleagues at the time.

Homeopathy is based on a principle of cure first described by Hippocrates, namely that like cures like. Essentially, a substance capable of causing certain symptoms in a healthy person will often cure those same symptoms when administered to the sick, by activating the body’s innate healing mechanisms to naturally overcome the disease. Homeopathic medicines are prepared from natural substances that would cause symptoms similar to a disease if administered in large doses, by a process which involves diluting them until they are no longer capable of any harmful effects.
